Before you go out to purchase bamboo flooring, have a clear understanding of what it is all about. Bamboo Flooring is available in a vertical grain, meaning it’s been laminated together on edge, side by side.

Horizontal grain bamboo flooring is engineered similar to plywood, meaning it has been laminated together with several layers, one on top of the other. Either choice is fine for flooring.

Vertical grain is considerably much more durable than the horizontal grain.

Additionally, Strand bamboo flooring is created by weaving long strands of bamboo together using heat, pressure and adhesive. Strand bamboo traditionally is the the most durable.

PROs:-Bamboo is really a tough material, much tougher than traditional oak or maple floors. -Bamboo floors can be easy to install. Click, nail down, floating or full spread glue.-The actual installation process will vary by brand and style.-Bamboo flooring comes pre-finished and the finish can be reapplied on most products.-Bamboo flooring adds to the resale value of most properties over vinyl floors or carpeting.-It is now available in many different stains.-Strand bamboo is highly resistant to moisture.

CONs: -Bamboo flooring is primarily sourced out of China and while there are many quality brands, there are even more that are poorly manufactured. -Since the product comes from China, you may not know exactly what properties go into the finishing of the floor. Formaldehyde or other hazardous materials may not be properly disclosed.-Brand names are next to impossible to come by. Most brands are store brands or generic. One brand is Teragren and appears to be a high quality product. -Bamboo flooring is durable, the finish is still very susceptible to scratching and you must take precautions against scratching the finish. The same precautions you would will hardwood floors.-It should not be installed offer chip board or particle board subfloors.-Most Manufacturer’s recommendations require installing over solid wood or plywood and most homes do not have plywood underlayment.
