In essence, one can store firewood conveniently using either a log holder or a firewood rack. Both are inherently different from each other because a log holder is used indoors to store a small amount of wood whereas a firewood rack is primarily used outdoors for storing large amounts of firewood. While purchasing a rack, one has to consider important factors such as the fact that there should be a cover that should protect the wood from rain and snow while also keeping the sides open to allow air exposure. Also, the rack should be significantly above the ground so that water does not seep in and make it damp.
Basically, the size and material used in the construction of the rack primarily depends upon the number and length of the logs that one would want to store within it. In essence, one can purchase a firewood rack that holds 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 of a cord. The material used in the construction of the structure of the rack can either be wood or metal. Basically, the main purpose of the rack is to protect the firewood against dampness from snow and rain as well as termite infestation. Wood racks are popular in regions where it is extremely cold during winters or there are high levels of humidity. Metal racks are primarily structures constructed by individuals themselves and are usually smaller in size.
The prices of racks differ because of their storage capacity. Firewood racks storing up to 1/8 of a cord have dimensions equaling 36 wide, 36 high and 10 inches deep and can cost around about $100 including shipping. On the other hand, if a person requires a larger rack with more storage capacity then one can go for the 1/2 cord rack which is basically 96 inches wide, 48 inches high and 14 inches deep. Such a stand would basically cost around about $200. The price differential is present because of the larger storage capacity.
Fundamentally speaking, a firewood rack as opposed to a log holder is not popular amongst customers and resultantly retailers as well. Log holders are smaller, cheaper and more useful because they inherently have a decorative purpose as well. On the other hand, most people usually construct their own racks using wood and sometimes even metal. Hence, the market for large wood racks exists but is inherently limited.
